Many years ago, right after Season 6 of Homicide: Life on the Street, I was fortunate enough to attend a three-week retreat with the Buddhist teacher Thich Nhat Hanh.
Airport carpet. Threads. Fibers. Dirt. Nasty. Factories. Distant shores. Sweatshops. Palm trees. Coconuts. The people that tread across the nasty dirty airport carpet. A mass of humanity. Make. Female. Young. Old. Busy. Rushing. Worried. Hope. Fear. Love. Reunion. Anticipation. Delays. Frustration. Security. Fear. Tired. Can we just board please??????
Thoughts:
Exhausted. Bored. Getting ready to board yet another plane but somewhere through the deep exhaustion anticipation. Anxious happy for a homecoming.
My laptop, which is playing music. The plastic parts, metal components, the people who put it together, the factory they worked in, the country the factory is in
The CD the music was copied from. The plastic, the factory where it was made, the people and the country
The band who made the music. The parents who made them, the instruments they learned to play, their producers, managers, company executives, their fans, the relationships that influenced the lyrics and the music
When I thought about the CD it made me think of the time I bought one, but the case was empty. The didn't take them back after opening, so there was a seemingly endless phone call (told many people "they don't take them back after you open it" many times) to finally get to the person who could help me
It was a Norah Jones CD. I opened it, all the packaging, the little book, was there but no CD. The store's receipt said they don't take CDs back after they're opened. It gave a list a record companies and their customer service. I had to tell the story to every person I was connected to. They all asked, "Can't you take it back to the store?" "They don't take it back after you open it "
Finally I was connected to a woman, I told her I bought a CD, it was empty. She said, "Oh! I wasn't expecting that!"
Then she took my name and address, they sent another CD. I kind of thought they would send just the CD in an envelope just to be cheap, but I got a new CD with all the packaging.
Earth,Clay, paint, 1000 years of frozen and thawed rock, change, sun, wind, rain, freezing temperatures, water, artist imagination, creative energy, artist's hands, pottery wheel, body energy, human contact, appreciation of a vendor for the item, shop window it sat in, my attention to notice it, money to purchase, feeds the artist, feeds the shop keeper, its beautry gives pleasure to the viewer, it inspires others, circle of beauty and inspiration is endless, creation is endless.
Thoughts: i took my time and totally enjoyed it. I will now view this object differently when I look at it daily.
