A friend versus an acquaintance. Once you reach a certain stage in adulthood, I think you find that people's energy has a larger impact on you. With everything else that you have to do in life, letting another person into your circle, into your space; it's a big commitment.

Are they looking for a friend? Or is the other person looking for an outlet for their own issues that they're struggling to deal with alone? What energy are they bringing in? Have to find a way to vibe and think about what you're contributing to the exchange.

I think we're all capable turning into a Worry Buddha but like most things in life, we have to find a way to keep that in check. Reach out when we have to, seek some guidance and understanding, but understand that the people around us who choose to spend time with us, they don't need to carry our worries too every time we interact.

But at least you stopped him from worrying for a little bit. And hopefully that helps him.

Loved this. I felt like I was there. The beginning reticence, the slurping, his worry, your attempt to listen & emphthize, his trying to control your response to him! Finally enjoying the food together. Friends? hmmm...still acquaintences, I think.
